Little Explorers (nurseries & schools)
FYT supports early years settings to establish Little Explorers groups. Little Explorers is for parents and children together and is open to all nursery parents once a week, throughout the academic year.
The groups are relaxed and informal and build on the skills that parents already have. Little Explorers provides a great opportunity for parents to learn how they can encourage their child’s learning at home, though play and fun. Every week, parents are introduced to a new topic in a key area of learning. The topics align with the EYFS curriculum.
We follow an evidenced based curriculum which is designed specifically for parents of children under five. The Peep Learning Together programme is used nationally, and more information is available on their website.
The most important aspect of the Little Explorers groups is that they are part of the nursery school culture, so that parents feel welcome and comfortable in the setting and staff have opportunities to build meaningful relationships with families. We want Little Explorers to be part of the nursery’s offer in the long term, so we train early years staff in the Peep Learning Together curriculum so they can deliver the Little Explorers groups themselves.
Through our groups, we are also developing a network of parent champions. Our parent champions provide peer support on the home learning environment and can also be a valuable asset to the nursery.
If you would like to learn more about how you can deliver Little Explorers groups at your setting, contact us.
In the summer of 2018, we plan to introduce our Little Explorers transition groups for children who will be joining the nursery in the new school year. More information will be posted as it becomes available or contact us if you would like to speak to the team.
